I really and truly love going with Luke to pick out a tree. Some people actually walk into the place, grab a tree, pay, and walk out (really, two separate families did this in the course of our time there, can you believe it?). Not us, to be sure. Luke pulls out one, I scrutinize (too many gaps, too full, too skinny, not enough bulk, too much bulk, too funny looking, too Charlie Brownish, etc. etc...), he puts it back, and on to the next.
The girls are part of this tradition too now, only they really don't care about the tree's appearance. All they do is play and hide in the trees for the duration. But they'll soon learn.
So needless to say, we bought a real tree this year, and boy is it a good looking one...( in my opinion)

Yep, I agree, you chose an especially lovely tree this year-and I remember the same tradition with my father; we would go to cut down our Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving at a Christmas tree farm, and we would all inspect and opinionate until we came upon the desired tree-a warm memory with Dad!
oh my goodness, Gab, I feel the same way about the whole tree experience; I love it, and if the day ever comes when we get a fake tree, I will probably cry some sad, frivolous tears. and every year I tell myself (and my dear, generous husband) - - "the tree is the only thing I spend money on to decorate the house with, so we can spend $20 on that, right?"
we don't do as much tree scrutinizing - - since the store only has about five trees and they are all tied up and you can't actually see much about the tree other than how tall it is . . . so it's more like "let's see what our luck was this year" fun and less "scrutinize to find the perfect tree" fun
That really is a beautiful tree, Gabrielle! I love it and I soooo miss a real tree, myself. We have an artifical one due to possible allergies, but some year, we've decided to buy a real one and break out the Zyrtec and the Xopenex (and pray for no trips to the ER). :) Honestly, it would be worth the risk. :)
Annie
you remind me of Mercy : ) If she couldn't come with us to choose a tree she would charge the women to make sure Popi got an appropriately big one. Part of the tree experience for her includes sleeping out under the tree once it's decorated. And just so you know, the camping out experience is a GROUP experience (which we had to guilt Jeremiah into doing, but.....in his defense...he did it). Otherwise it doesn't count!
